Stern's “Never Again Education Act,” Unanimously Approved by Senate Education Committee

SACRAMENTO – Moving beyond remembrance to action is one of the goals of Senator Henry Stern’s (D-Los Angeles) SB 693, the Never Again Education Act of 2021, which cleared the Senate Education Committee today on a unanimous 7-0 vote.

“As our collective memory fades and we lose the last generation of survivors, we must redouble our commitment to educate the next generation and refuse to slip into the same apathy and ignorance that allows hatred to take root,” said Stern.

Leyva Bill Promoting Girls State and Boys State Parity Passes Senate Education Committee

SACRAMENTO – Rejecting the current gender-based discrimination that offers less robust program offerings to young women compared to young men in specified civic education and leadership programs, the Senate Education Committee today approved Senate Bill 363 that will repeal the American Legion’s exception to sex discrimination provisions in the California Education Code.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Repeal Discriminatory Loitering Law Targeting Sex Workers Passes Senate Public Safety Committee

April 14, 2021

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 357, the Safer Streets for All Act, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee last night by a vote of 4-1. SB 357 repeals provisions of California law that criminalize loitering for the intent to engage in sex work. These provisions — arrests for which are based on an officer’s subjective perception of whether a person is “acting like” they intend to engage in sex work — result in the disproportionate criminalization of trans, Black and Brown women, and perpetuates violence toward sex workers.

Bill to Fix and Build California’s Roads Using Surplus Plastic Waste Advances in State Senate

April 13, 2021

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate Committee on Transportation today unanimously approved Senate Bill 580 by Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego) that would the task the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) with conducting a study assessing the feasibility, cost-effectiveness and lifecycle environmental benefits of including recycled plastics in asphalt used for the construction and repair of a state highway or road. The idea for SB 580 was brought to Sen. Hueso by students from Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista.
