Senator Wieckowski's bipartisan resolution calls on Congress to end double taxation on settlements and judgments

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 13, urging Congress to support the End Double Taxation of Successful Civil Claims Act (S 2627), federal legislation aimed at changing the 2017 tax reform law.  Wieckowski is seeking to have the state Legislature support the new federal legislation to prevent consumers and their attorneys who prevail against corporate lawbreakers from being taxed twice on their judgments or settlements.

Senator Wiener Introduces Bill to Confront Meth Crisis Using Contingency Management Intervention

Sacramento – Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced SB 888 to address the increase in meth usage and overdose deaths. This legislation expands substance use disorder treatment options covered under Medi-Cal, requiring Medi-Cal to pay for contingency management. Contingency management has proven to be the most effective method of treatment for methamphetamine addiction. Contingency management describes the practice of giving those struggling with drug addiction financial rewards if they test clean.

State Senator Jerry Hill will introduce legislation to help clear logjams in the state’s process for handling claims from workers for unpaid wages. “Workers deserve to receive the wages they’ve earned, and it’s disgraceful when they are denied their rightful pay,” said Senator Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. “California should not be compounding the challenges faced by wage theft victims with a claims process that takes an average of 400 days to produce a result. That’s more than three times the 120-day turnaround the state expects.”

The measure is sponsored by Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice, a national network of over 40,000 crime survivors whose local chapters and members make up California’s largest statewide group of crime victims.
