Senator Rubio’s Education Package Will Prepare Younger Students for Academic Success

SACRAMENTO, CA – Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) today introduced two education bills that will help younger students attain greater academic success as well as remove obstacles for parents to volunteer in the classroom.

Senate Bill 1153 will require kindergarten attendance as a requirement prior to entering the first grade with some exemptions. The second bill, SB 1176, will remove a financial burden from parent volunteers who want to participate at their children’s school but cannot afford fingerprinting fees.

Sen. Dodd Introduces Power Shutoff Generator Bill

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, today announced new legislation to ensure critical facilities such as hospitals, fire stations and water treatment plants can operate during wildfire-inspired electric power shutoffs such as those used last year by Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

“Essential facilities must continue to function if PG&E again uses forced power shutoffs to avoid having its equipment spark fires,” Sen. Dodd said. “My bill is a commonsense measure that would allow the use of generators, ensuring the public is served and protected at the most critical time.”

(Sacramento – February 18, 2020) – Today Senator Allen introduced SB 1044 to ban the sale and use of dangerous chemicals found in firefighting foams. These chemicals, known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, or 'PFAS' chemicals, do not break down once introduced into the environment—the reason that they are widely referred to as “forever chemicals.”

Currently, cities and counties must identify in their housing elements (a term for a state-mandated housing plan) at least one zone where emergency shelters can receive streamlined approval.
