SACRAMENTO, CA – Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senator Melissa Hurtado’s (D-Sanger) legislations, Senate Bill 513 and 351. The bills will address expanding healthier access for communities in rural and unincorporated areas by providing relief for families without reliable access to water as well as ensure access to resources from the Transformative Climate Communities program.

Gov. Newsom Signs SB 206, the ‘Fair Pay to Play Act’

In a historic moment for college athletes, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 206, the Fair Pay to Play Act, by state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, and Sen. Steve Bradford, D-Gardena. SB 206 makes California the first state to restore to student athletes a right everyone else has: the right to earn money from their name, image, and likeness.

Governor Signs Sen. Dodd’s Water Management Bill

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, announced today that Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed his legislation to help California oversee its water, protecting the precious resource for people and the environment.

“Water is an essential resource in California that must be protected and carefully managed,” Sen. Dodd said. “It is quite simply the lifeblood of our state. Stream gages provide important information in this era of droughts and flooding, driven in part by climate change. You can’t manage what you don’t measure.”

Humboldt Area Foundation Invests $300,000 in North Coast Nursing Program

Humboldt County — Humboldt State University’s RN-to-BSN Nursing program received another boost today — a $300,000 grant from the Orvamae Emmerson Endowment Fund of the Humboldt Area Foundation.  

Senator Mike McGuire, Humboldt State University (HSU) President Tom Jackson and College of the Redwoods (CR) President Keith Flamer and other officials were on hand as the grant was announced today at an event at the Humboldt Area Foundation in Bayside.

Governor Signs Bill by Senator Rubio Aligning Local Water Authority Election Dates, Streamlining Reporting Requirements

SACRAMENTO, CA – Legislation by Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) aligning elections and streamlining reporting requirements for the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority (SGBWQA) was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom today.

Senate Bill 413 reduces costs and increases efficiency at the SGBWQA by staggering the election process that currently overlaps with the city council elections and removes duplicative reporting requirements.

Senator Rubio Bill Adding Education Advocate on State Homeless Council Signed by Governor

SACRAMENTO, CA – Gov. Gavin Newsom today signed legislation by Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) that adds a higher education representative to a state homeless program to advocate for college and university students who are homeless.

SB 687 will increase the effectiveness and diversity of the state’s efforts to address California’s homelessness crisis by adding a representative of the public higher education system to the Homeless Coordinating and Financing Council.

FREMONT – Supporters of a project to restore Alameda Creek and build up sediment near the baylands to address the threat of sea level rise joined Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) today for a ceremonial check presentation next to the creek.  Wieckowski championed the project in the Legislature and secured $31.4 million in funding.
