SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 923, the TGI Inclusive Care Act passed the Assembly by a vote of 60-11. It now heads to the Senate for final sign-off before going to the Governor’s desk.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Continue Protecting Undocumented Immigrants in Court Signed by Governor Newsom

SACRAMENTO - Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 836 into law. It becomes law immediately. SB 836 re-enacts the safeguards from SB 785 (Wiener, 2018), which protected a person’s immigration status in a public court record, unless the presiding judge determined that immigration status was relevant information. This legislation had a sunset date of January 1, 2022, so it has now expired.

Governor Signs Portantino Bill Creating Regional Affordable Housing Trust

Sacramento, CA – Today, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 1177, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), into law. SB 1177 creates a regional affordable housing trust between the cities of Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale. In June, the Senator announced that his budget request to create and fund the regional affordable housing trust had been approved in the 2022-2023 State Budget, allocating $23 million to help finance affordable housing projects created by SB 1177.

Senator Leyva’s “Student Civic Engagement Act” Graduates to Governor’s Desk

SACRAMENTO – Emphasizing the importance of getting more students civically involved in government and their community, the California State Senate today approved Senate Bill 955 by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) requiring middle and high school students (6th – 12th grade) to be allowed one excused school-day length absence to participate in a civic activity such as public commenting, candidate speeches, political or civic forums, and town halls.  Following its passage from the Legislature, SB 955 will now proceed to the Governor for final action on the bill.
