McGuire Fights to Protect Smith River – Strip Mine Water Application Pulled

Sacramento, CA – Two days after State Senator Mike McGuire introduced legislation calling on Congress to protect the Smith River, the Panama-based Red Flat Nickel Corporation has withdrawn its water application from the Oregon Water Resources Department.
“I'm grateful to join with Congressman Huffman to fight this devastating proposal and I am pleased to see the mining company reconsidering their plans. That said, now is the time to ensure the entire Smith River watershed is protected forever which means our work is far from over,” McGuire said.

East San Jose Community Clean-Up on Jan. 31

SAN JOSE – Volunteers will be hauling trash and wiping out graffiti in a campaign to fight blight in neighborhoods around Arbuckle Elementary School. Also scheduled to join the effort is a Caltrans crew that will pick up litter and trim vegetation on the I-680/King Road ramps.It’s all part of a community clean-up co-sponsored by Senator Jim Beall, D-San Jose, who organized the project after speaking to many East San Jose residents who complained of illegal dumping in their neighborhoods.

Senator Galgiani Announces the Introduction of Legislation Designed to Get Dangerous Synthetic Drugs Out of California

 

Sacramento—Today, Senator Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton) introduced Senate Bill 139 which is drafted with the intent of aiding law enforcement in the protection of our communities from synthetic drugs. In a follow-up to her previous legislation from 2014 which created the penalty structure for the possession of a synthetic drug, Galgiani introduced SB 139 in order to assist with the enforcement of the law.

McGuire Introduces Bill to Protect the Smith River from Devastating Strip Mine

Sacramento, CA – State Senator Mike McGuire introduced legislation today – joining with Congressman Jared Huffman - calling on Congress to protect Northern California’s only wild river from the devastating effects of a proposed strip-mining operation along the North Fork of the Smith River in southern Oregon, just over the California border.
“The Smith River is one of the last unspoiled rivers in the west, and I plan to keep it that way,” said McGuire.

State Highway Grant Secured to Improve Safety on PCH

MALIBU – The City of Malibu and PCH Taskforce Co-Chairs Senator Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills), and Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), along with former Co-Chair Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Redondo Beach), announced that they have secured a $124,250 safety corridor grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in order to improve safety on the notoriously dangerous Pacific Coast Highway/CA-1.
