With Governor’s Signature, Ryan’s Law Becomes Reality

Sacramento, CA. Street racers and extreme speeders will face stricter criminal
prosecution after Governor Newsom signed Senator Stern’s SB 1472 this week. Ryan’s Law
is named after Ryan Koeppel, a Tarzana teenager killed by a repeat extreme speeder taking
a left on August 6, 2020. A number of other residents in the southland and California have
been killed by criminally reckless drivers, including:

Sacramento, CA - Senate Bill 1116, a measure introduced by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) which seeks to create a payroll fund to support small nonprofit performing arts venues (SNPAOs), was signed into law today by Governor Newsom.  The effort comes at a time when small community theatres are struggling in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Governor Signs Portantino’s Bill Addressing Teacher Shortages & Benefiting Language Immersion Classes

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 941, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank) seeks to address California’s teacher shortages and to improve student learning environments, was signed by Governor Newsom.  SB 974 would authorize school districts to locally determine inter-district collaboration for courses related to STEM and dual language immersion.  The bill was inspired by comments the Senator received from parents in the Pasadena Unified School District during the COVID-19 pandemic.

SACRAMENTO, CA- Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 489 authored by Senator John Laird (D – Santa Cruz) to authorize the Department of Water Resources (DWR) to advance funds to the Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project to protect the communities of Watsonville and Pajaro. These communities have faced repeated floods due to inadequate levels of flood protection along the Pajaro River system.

Leyva Bill Empowering Sexual Assault Survivors Signed Into Law

SACRAMENTO – After earning unanimous support in the Legislature, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed Senate Bill 916 by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino), which will empower survivors with critical information following a sexual assault.  By providing them with this information, survivors will be able to make informed decisions regarding steps they wish to take, or not, in the post-assault process.
