Sacramento, Calif. — A bill to create a statewide collection and recycling program at California retailers for consumer batteries passed the Senate Committee on Environmental Quality on Monday. SB 289, Better Battery Recycling and Fire Risk Reduction, authored by Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton), passed by a 5-2 vote.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s housing legislation, Senate Bill 478, passed the Senate Governance and Finance Committee by a vote of 4-1

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s legislation, Senate Bill 617, the Solar Access Act, has passed the Senate Governance and Finance Committee by a vote of 4-0. SB 617 implements automated solar permitting in counties with a population of over 150,000. This will allow for on-the-spot approvals of residential solar and solar-plus-storage systems, which will greatly decrease wait times, cut permitting costs for local governments and homeowners, and help California meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.

SACRAMENTO, CA--With California water allocations slashed to only 5 percent following another dry winter, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) announced that she is seeking ideas from her Central Valley constituents for ways that California can conserve water and remain resilient in the face of devastating drought conditions.

Sacramento, CA – In the face of another statewide drought, today the legislature is announcing an historic investment of over half a billion dollars for wildfire prevention, response and resiliency. 

This is the largest early budget action in California history and is a critical step to ensuring the safety of our communities as we enter what could be another devastating wildfire season. An additional round of funding is expected in June, or early July.

SACRAMENTO – With drought conditions threatening another serious wildfire season, Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, today lauded an agreement between Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders to invest $536 million in wildfire prevention and resiliency measures.

SACRAMENTO – On Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Senator Henry Stern (D-Los Angeles) called for moving beyond remembrance to action, urging passage of SB 693, the Never Again Education of 2021.  The bill would help address the growing knowledge gap among young Americans about the Holocaust and other recent genocides by offering new teaching methods and enhanced resources for teachers and students, to remedy a recent rise in anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and other acts of hatred.
