Last week, the Assembly Judiciary Committee passed out of committee SB 1410, the Senate’s priority legislation to protect renters from evictions and provide financial relief to landlords with mortgages and maintenance bills to pay.

SAN FRANCISCO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), released the following statement in response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed written by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson that attacks Senator Wiener’s key pieces of housing legislation: SB 50 and its predecessor SB 827. SB 50 would have reformed zoning laws to legalize affordable housing and multifamily housing across California in areas connected to good jobs and transit.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Steve Glazer will hold a press availability Friday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. to urge passage of his legislation to raise fines for short-term rental abuses. He will also discuss Air BnB’s unprecedented decision to pursue legal claims against one of their short term rental guests. In the last few weeks, there have been short-term rental abuses in Los Angeles and Northern California, including a party at a Sacramento-area rental earlier this month where three people were shot after violence erupted at the gathering.

A heat advisory has been issued for August 15th and 16th in the Southern Central Valley. Temperatures are expected to near 110 degrees over the next week. The following locations will be open as cooling centers in the Central Valley to help residents escape the heat:

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network honored Senator Hill for his work to ban retail sales of flavored tobacco products. The organization also recognized Senator Lena Gonzalez and Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen for their efforts to fight cancer with strong tobacco policy.

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement regarding the Judicial Council of California’s decision to extend emergency rules on evictions and foreclosures to September 1, 2020:
