Mayor Garcetti Joins Senator Portantino to Celebrate $2.2M State Funding for Los Angeles Zoo

Glendale, California – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – Burbank), the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), and the Los Angeles Zoo were joined by Mayor Eric Garcetti today during a press conference to celebrate the allocation of $2.2 million from the 2022-2023 State Budget to support Los Angeles Zoo biodiversity and renovation projects.  The projects are set to benefit the protection of endangered species and the development of more accessible and inclusive facilities.  The funding was a result of a Portantino budget request on behalf of the Zoo.

Senate Leader Atkins’ Bill To Support Navy, Marine Military Families Across California Passes Legislature

SACRAMENTO – The Legislature has passed Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins’ (D-San Diego) SB 1041, legislation that would make permanent the sales tax exemption for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) and other qualifying organizations that provide financial, educational, and other assistance to members of the Armed Forces of the United States, their family members, and survivors. The bill passed out of the Assembly Thursday on a 76-0 bipartisan vote, and it now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.

Legislature Passes Sen. Dodd’s Faithless Electors Bill

SACRAMENTO – Responding to threats to the nation’s free election process by followers of former President Donald Trump, the California Legislature today approved a bill from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that would ensure the state’s presidential electors cast ballots for candidates who win the popular vote and do not instead switch candidates or abstain from voting.
