SACRAMENTO ­— The Assembly Judiciary Committee today approved SB 1099 by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) with bipartisan support to make several improvements to bankruptcy law, including preventing debtors from having their home sold out from under them or losing a vehicle to repossession when they have never missed a payment. The bill now goes to the Assembly floor.

Sacramento, CA – Senate Bill 918, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) which strengthens California’s conceal-carry laws, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee today. 

SACRAMENTO, CA – The State Assembly Judiciary today passed Senate Bill 616, Piqui’s Law, by Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), which mandates judicial training to ensure a child’s safety in custody proceedings.

SB 616, Piqui’s Law: Keeping Children Safe from Family Violence is named for a 5-year-old murdered by his father. The boy’s mother, Ana Estevez, fought in family court to protect her son against her ex-husband before Piqui’s death. The bill will align with federal provisions within the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in order to receive funding.

Sacramento, CA - Senate Bill 932, authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety, passed the Assembly Transportation Committee.  The bill requires California cities to take concrete steps to reduce traffic collisions and fatalities and has garnered an impressive list of supporters, including Streets For All, ActiveSGV, CalBike, and Streets Are For Everyone.   

SACRAMENTO – Legislation advanced today from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that would help control the state’s growing wild pig population, reducing damage caused by the invasive species to the environment, private property and agriculture.

“With this vote we’re a step closer to controlling the destructive, non-native wild pig population, which is exploding across California,” Sen. Dodd said. “They are endangering sensitive habitats, farms and other animals. By increasing opportunities to hunt them we can reduce the threat to our state.”

SACRAMENTO – Legislation has advanced from Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, D-San Diego, and Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, to add wine and distilled spirits bottles to California’s recycling program.

“California can increase the recycling rates of millions of bottles that would otherwise wind up in our landfills or be illegally discarded,” said Sen. Dodd. “This is a common sense bill that benefits our environment and consumers. I look forward to seeing it pass the full Assembly and be signed by Gov. Newsom.”

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg of Van Nuys released the following after Senate Bill 1327, a plan to help end gun violence by allowing private citizens to sue gun manufacturers, passed its first Floor vote by the California Assembly.

The first-in-the-nation law, backed by Gov. Newsom, passed on a 50-19 vote in the 80-member Assembly. It next returns to the Senate for consideration later this week.

SACRAMENTO – In a historic moment for California, the state Assembly today passed SCA 10, a constitutional amendment to make explicit the fundamental constitutional right to abortion and contraceptives in a 58-16 vote. The bill, jointly authored by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), and co-authored by a large coalition of Democratic Legislators, successfully passed its final legislative requirement just three days after the U.S. Supreme Court released an opinion that overturned Roe v.
