SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today signed Senator Bob Wieckowski’s (D-Fremont) bill to crack down on fraud in California’s beverage container recycling system. SB 38 will prohibit cash payments from processors to recyclers. It also directs the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) to study and develop a system to address the large amount of glass contamination in the recycling process.

SACRAMENTO – A pioneering pilot program in the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) could allow all of its nearly 30,000 students to attend one of the district’s three campuses at a reduced or possibly no cost now that SB 893 (Becker) has been signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Atkins (D-San Diego) and Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) announced that Senate Bill 1183, their bipartisan legislation in partnership with The Dollywood Foundation to establish the Imagination Library of California Statewide Program, has been signed by Governor Newsom. The Imagination Library of California statewide program will work with local partners in each county to mail free, age-appropriate books directly to California’s early readers every month, from birth until age five.

Leyva (D-Chino) requiring middle and high school students (6th – 12th grade) to be allowed one excused school-day length absence to participate in a civic activity such as public commenting, candidate speeches, political or civic forums, and town halls.
