Galgiani Resolution Declares June Disability Awareness Month

SACRAMENTO - Senator Galgiani is pleased to announce, today, SCR 53, which declares the month of June, 2015 as Disability Awareness Month passed the Assembly Floor. This resolution highlights the over 4 million California residents living with a disability. Senator Galgiani authored this resolution following the lead of several local municipalities, who have recognized the contribution of individuals with disabilities in their communities.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) today honored Beach City Baseball Academy as the 26th Senate District’s “Small Business of the Year.”  Matt Watson, the Academy’s Director of Operations, accepted the award on behalf of owner Richard Murad at a luncheon in Sacramento.

Earlier today, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) recognized Job Korea USA in Los Angeles as the 2015 24th Senate District “Small Business of the Year.”

Speaking at the Small Business Day ceremony at the Sacramento Convention Center, Senator De León praised California’s small businesses as the backbone of the state’s economy, and highlighted JobKoreaUSA.com CEO Brandon Lee’s role in creating economic opportunity in the district.

Sacramento-The State Senate approved SB 212 authored by Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) on a unanimous bipartisan vote of 40 to 0. The bill will address the proliferation of Butane Hash Oil (BHO) and methamphetamine manufacturing in residential neighborhoods by making it an aggravated felony to manufacture the drugs within close proximity to occupied residences and structures.

SACRAMENTO – Earlier today, Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) recognized Riverside Grill in Chino as the 2015 20th State Senate District “Small Business of the Year”.
First opening in 1997, Riverside Grill has remained a popular family-run Inland Empire eatery for almost two decades.  Founded by brothers Rodrigo and Al Avila—as well as a third brother that is no longer affiliated with the restaurant—Riverside Grill started as a counter service restaurant though was renovated to sit 80 people with a full service bar known for its extensive local craft beer selections.

Since my appointment as chair of the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments in January, I have been exploring legislative solutions to California’s unacceptably low rate of voter participation. 

Toward that end my committee has held three lengthy oversight hearings where we heard from voting rights advocates, voter outreach groups, state and local elections officials, academia, political researchers, and political reformers.
