Every year, I have the honor of hosting my annual State of the 10th Senate District Address. In conjunction with this year's event, to be held in early October, I will be giving out the 2019 Local Hero Awards, recognizing community leaders and organizations throughout the District.

Senator Roth’s Bill to Protect the Mojave Signed into Law

July 31, 2019

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, Senator Richard D. Roth’s (D-Riverside) Senate Bill 307 was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. SB 307 protects the California Mojave National Preserve by hitting the pause button on a controversial pumping project backed by Cadiz, Inc. which proposes to pump an average of 50,000 acre-feet of water per year for 50 years from the Mojave to sell to water districts up to 200 miles away in Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties for profit.

Senator Tom Umberg Successfully Secures State Budget Funds To Assist Discovery Science Center of Orange County

Senator Tom Umberg (D – Santa Ana) announced today that he has successfully secured $10 million in state budget funds to assist the Discovery Science Center of Orange County.  The funds will be utilized to assist the Science Center with the recent expansion and addition of new science exhibits and educational services.

Governor Newsom Signs Leyva Bill Requiring “Know Your Rights” Insurance Disclosures for Mobilehome and Condo Residents

SACRAMENTO – After earning strong bipartisan support in the Senate and Assembly, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 508 authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) that will require insurers to provide timely disclosures and information to mobilehome and condominium residents regarding their residential property insurance policies and their rights associated with their policy.

Governor Signs Rubio Legislation Strengthening the Commission that Credentials California Teachers

July 30, 2019

SACRAMENTO, CA –Today, Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) announced that Governor Gavin Newsom signed her legislation to change the make-up of the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), the body that oversees the credentialing of all teachers and certificated staff in the state’s public schools. Specifically, SB 478 mandates the CTC to include a certified human resource administrator in a public elementary or secondary school in California.

SACRAMENTO – Legislation authored by Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) to improve accommodations for Californians with disabilities and survivors of domestic violence seeking public assistance benefits was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Sen. Dodd’s College Student Food Insecurity Bill signed by Governor

SACRAMENTO –Legislation from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that addresses the growing problem of college student food insecurity by ensuring low-income students have reliable access to nutritious food through the Cal Fresh program was signed into law today by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Governor Signs Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Extend Domestic Partnership to Opposite Sex Couples

July 30, 2019

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to allow all Californians to register as domestic partners instead of marrying, Senate Bill 30, was signed into law by Governor Newsom. Under current law, only same sex couples and opposite sex couples age 62 and older are eligible for domestic partnerships. SB 30 ends this discrimination.

Governor Signs Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Protect Sex Workers from Arrest when Reporting Violent Crimes & to Prohibit Use of Condoms as Evidence of Sex Work

July 30, 2019

San Francisco –  Today, Governor Newsom signed Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to protect sex workers from arrest for misdemeanor sex work related crimes after they report a serious and violent felony, such as rape. Senate Bill 233 also ensures that the possession of condoms cannot be used as probable cause to arrest someone for sex work or introduced as evidence to prosecute someone for sex work. SB 233 will take effect on January 1, 2020

Senator Umberg Modernizes the California Filing Process for Presidential Candidates of the United States

July 30, 2019

Senate Bill 505 (SB 505) authored by Senator Tom Umberg (D – Santa Ana) was signed into law today by California Governor Gavin Newsom. The bill, sponsored by California Secretary of State Alex Padilla updates the filing requirements for Presidential candidates seeking to compete in California’s primary election. The law will take effect for the 2020 Presidential Primary.
