Legislation Makes the State a Long-Term Funding Partner for Affordable Housing

Sacramento—Today, the Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution in support of SB 5, the Affordable and Sustainable Community Act, sponsored by Sens. Jim Beall (D-San Jose), Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) and Anthony Portantino (D- La Caňada Flintridge).

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 532 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed the Assembly Local Government Committee. Senator Portantino introduced SB 532 at the request of the City of Glendale. After the dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies (RDAs), Glendale was left with $27 million dollars in bond proceeds but precluded from using these funds for housing.  SB 532 will give Glendale the ability to use these locally derived bond funds exclusively for affordable housing.    

San Francisco–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 288 passed the Assembly Committee on Elections and Redistricting with a 4-0 vote. SB 288 would make it legal for Dreamers and other immigrants to run for California Democratic Party County Central Committee seats and for California Democratic Party Delegate positions. It is currently impossible for Dreamers and other immigrants to register as Democrats and thus run for these positions. A “Dreamer” is an individual born in a foreign country who was brought to the U.S.

La Cañada Flintridge, California – Today, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) announced the addition of Minwoo “David” Kim to his district staff. Mr. Kim will be covering the cities of La Cañada Flintridge, San Marino, and South Pasadena. One of his focus areas will be working on API (Asian Pacific Islander) issues in the 25th Senate District.

State Senator Jerry Hill issued a statement today to set the record straight about his legislation to combat the epidemic use of flavored tobacco products by young people.

SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) issued the following statement on today’s announcement that the 2020 Census questionnaire will not include a citizenship question:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), announced today that the 2019-20 state budget includes $5.6 million to help alleviate the homelessness crisis in the San Gabriel Valley.

“I made tackling the housing and homelessness crisis in the San Gabriel Valley a top priority in my campaign.  Now, in my first year as State Senator, I am proud to have successfully secured $5.6 million to support and empower our local service providers to address this crisis in the way that best fits our regional needs,” Sen. SACRAMENTO – Senator Henry Stern’s SB 630 was signed on Monday by Governor Newsom. The bill, recently endorsed by the Los Angeles City Council, will empower communities to take a local approach to fight human trafficking by making clear that current law does not prevent a local governing body from acting to prevent slavery or human trafficking.

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 69, the Ocean Resiliency Act of 2019, which aims to improve and protect the health of the Pacific Ocean off of California’s coastline passed the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife with a 9-3 vote.
