Senator Wiener’s Health Plan Accountability Act — Increasing Fines Tenfold for Illegally Denying Coverage — Signed into Law

SACRAMENTO - Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to impose stronger accountability on health plans by significantly increasing fines for illegal denial of health insurance coverage. Senate Bill 858, the Health Plan Accountability Act, updates and increases the penalty amount tenfold for health plans that violate state law in denying or delaying timely access to care. This law will take effect on January 1, 2023.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Expedite Sustainable Transportation Projects Signed into Law

SACRAMENTO - Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 922. It will become law on January 1, 2023. SB 922 extends and improves upon Senator Wiener’s previous legislation (SB 288, 2020) to expedite bike, pedestrian, light rail, and rapid bus projects by exempting these environmentally sustainable projects from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). SB 922 will accelerate approval of sustainable, climate-friendly transportation projects.

Senator Wiener’s Historic Bill to Provide Refuge for Trans Kids and Their Families Signed into Law

SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s legislation to provide refuge for trans kids and their families, Senate Bill 107. It will take effect on January 1, 2023. SB 107 will protect trans kids and their families if they flee to California from Alabama, Texas, Idaho or any other state criminalizing the parents of trans kids for allowing them to receive gender-affirming care.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 923, the TGI Inclusive Care Act. This first-in-the-nation law will help create a more inclusive and culturally competent healthcare system for TGI (transgender, gender diverse, and intersex) people in California by requiring:

Senator Wiener’s Statement on $41 Million State Monkeypox Emergency Budget Allocation

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement regarding the announcement that the Legislature and Governor have agreed on an emergency budget appropriation of $41 million for public health response to the monkeypox outbreak.

In July, Senator Wiener — who chairs the Senate Select Committee on Monkeypox — organized and spearheaded a letter to the Governor and legislative leadership requesting this emergency budget allocation.
