District attorneys would have a new tool in prosecuting cases of elderly abuse and fraud that span multiple counties under legislation introduced today by state Senator Jerry Hill. San Mateo County DA Steve Wagstaffe proposed the bill idea to the senator to better protect elderly individuals from criminals who prey on victims in different counties to thwart prosecution.

More than a dozen bills by Senator Jerry Hill will take effect as law during the coming year with new mandates for safety, consumer protection, accountability and other requirements phasing in from January 1 to July 1. All but one of the bills being enacted – legislation to expand a pilot program requiring repeat DUI offenders and certain first timers to install technology in their cars to prevent drunk driving – were passed and signed by the governor in 2018.

Led by Senator Jerry Hill, nearly 20 state lawmakers introduced a bill today to prohibit sales of flavored tobacco products – including flavored electronic cigarettes and menthol cigarettes – in retail stores and vending machines to halt an upswing in nicotine consumption by youths. Joined by more than a dozen legislators, Senator Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, also introduced a bill to impose stricter age verification requirements for tobacco products of all kinds that are sold online or by mail, phone or fax.
