Senators Wiener and Limón’s Join Statement on Failure of SB 467 in Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Senator Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) released the following statement regarding SB 467. The Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee voted 4-3 against SB 467 (with the bill needing 5 votes to pass), which would ban fracking and other destructive oil extraction methods, as well as require 2,500 buffer zones for oil drilling near homes, schools, and playgrounds.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Repeal Discriminatory Loitering Law Targeting Sex Workers Passes Senate Public Safety Committee

April 14, 2021

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 357, the Safer Streets for All Act, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee last night by a vote of 4-1. SB 357 repeals provisions of California law that criminalize loitering for the intent to engage in sex work. These provisions — arrests for which are based on an officer’s subjective perception of whether a person is “acting like” they intend to engage in sex work — result in the disproportionate criminalization of trans, Black and Brown women, and perpetuates violence toward sex workers.

Senator Wiener’s Climate Corporate Accountability Act Passes Senate Environmental Quality Committee

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 260, the Climate Corporate Accountability Act (CCAA), passed the Senate Environmental Quality Committee by a vote of 4-2. SB 260 would be the first law in the country to require U.S.-based companies — those doing business in California and generating over $1 billion in gross annual revenue — to disclose all of their greenhouse gas emissions to the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Senator Wiener’s Solar Access Act Passes Senate Governance and Finance Committee

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s legislation, Senate Bill 617, the Solar Access Act, has passed the Senate Governance and Finance Committee by a vote of 4-0. SB 617 implements automated solar permitting in counties with a population of over 150,000. This will allow for on-the-spot approvals of residential solar and solar-plus-storage systems, which will greatly decrease wait times, cut permitting costs for local governments and homeowners, and help California meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.

Senator Wiener’s PET Act, Ending Harmful and Unnecessary Chemical Testing on Dogs and Cats, Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s legislation, Senate Bill 252, also known as the PET (Prohibiting Extraneous Testing) Act, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a vote of 7-1. The PET Act ends the suffering of cats and dogs by prohibiting these household pets from being used in toxicity tests for products such as pesticides, food and color additives, and drugs. This bill exempts the testing of pet medications and pet products and testing for biomedical research.

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation, Senate Bill 519, which decriminalizes the possession and personal use of certain psychedelic drugs, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a vote of 4-1. Research from top medical universities shows that these substances can have significant benefits, particularly for treating mental health and substance use disorders, and decriminalizing their personal use is part of the larger movement to end the racist War on Drugs and its failed and destructive policies.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Legalize Overdose Prevention Programs — Also Known as Safe Consumption Sites — Passes Senate Public Safety Committee

April 6, 2021

Sacramento - Senate Bill 57, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), has passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a vote of 4-1. This legislation would legalize overdose prevention programs, also known as safe consumption sites or safe injection sites, as a pilot program in San Francisco, Oakland, and the County of Los Angeles. Each of the pilot areas will decide locally whether to participate, and SB 57 simply removes the state prohibition that currently makes such programs illegal.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s legislation, Senate Bill 477 and Senate Bill 10, passed the Senate Housing Committee. SB 477 passed with a bipartisan vote of 7-1 and will now head to the Senate Appropriations Committee. SB 10 passed with a bipartisan vote of 7-1, and will now head to the Governance and Finance Committee.
