Senator Wiener Reintroduces Key Housing Legislation – SB 10 – to Provide Cities with a Powerful New Tool to Build More Housing in Non-Sprawl Areas

Sacramento - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced SB 10, which provides a powerful tool for local governments to upzone neighborhoods to 10 unit apartment buildings in an expedited process, as long as the upzoned areas are not sprawl. By allowing cities to increase density in a sensible way, SB 10 will help ease California’s housing affordability crisis and climate crisis, spurred by a statewide shortage of 3.5 million homes. This housing crisis has only worsened due to COVID-19 and its economic impacts.

Senator Wiener’s Statement on Project Homekey Grant for Permanent Housing for Homeless in San Francisco

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement as the California Department of Housing and Community Development announced that San Francisco would receive $44,840,003 in grant funding to create permanent housing for for those experiencing homelessness or at-risk of experiencing homelessness. This funding will allow the city of San Francisco to acquire a hotel and convert it into 232 units of permanent housing for some of the most at-risk individuals in our community.

Senator Wiener Responds to President Trump’s Attacks on His Housing Legislation

SAN FRANCISCO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), released the following statement in response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed written by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson that attacks Senator Wiener’s key pieces of housing legislation: SB 50 and its predecessor SB 827. SB 50 would have reformed zoning laws to legalize affordable housing and multifamily housing across California in areas connected to good jobs and transit.

SB 288 will expand CEQA statutory exemptions to speed up most of California’s sustainable transportation projects and make the approval and construction processes more streamlined and cost-effective. Senator Wiener Introduces New Legislation to End Mandatory Jail and Prison Sentences for Nonviolent Drug Offenders

Sacramento - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) today announced the introduction of SB 378, legislation that would end mandatory jail and prison sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. This would repeal state law established during the height of the War on Drugs era in 1986, which enacted these mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses. The War on Drugs has since been widely acknowledged as failed racist policy, and its vestiges must be dismantled.

Senator Wiener Brings Back Racial Justice Legislation to Create Fairer, More Representative Juries

July 20, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) has re-introduced legislation that would expand the pool of prospective jurors to include any state tax filers. This would ensure that jury pools are more diverse and demographically representative of California’s population. Currently, juries are selected using lists of registered voters and licensed drivers or identification card holders. However, these lists are not demographically representative, and thus the jury pool pulled from these lists tend to skew whiter, wealthier, and overall less diverse than the state actually is.

Senator Wiener and Assemblymember James Ramos ask Capitol Leaders to Create Advisory Group to Determine Future of Toppled Serra Statue

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D-Highland) yesterday asked the Legislature’s administrative committees to obtain input from an advisory group that includes historians and California Native Americans before determining the fate of the Junípero Serra statue taken down on Capitol grounds by protestors on July 4.

The Serra sculpture was placed in Capitol Park after the state approved legislation by then-San Francisco Assemblymember Milton Marks in 1965. His law, AB 1124, authorized the purchase and maintenance of the memorial.
