Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Simplify CalFresh Access for Seniors and People with Disabilities Passes Senate Human Services Committee

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement regarding his legislation, SB 882, which would make it easier for seniors and those with disabilities to access CalFresh. SB 882 passed the Senate Health Committee with a unanimous bipartisan vote, and will now move on to the Appropriations Committee.

Senator Wiener’s Statement on Senate Housing Package

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement on the announcement of a Senate housing package.

Senator Wiener is a joint author of legislation with Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), SB 1120, which would allow two-unit zoning statewide and to allow lots to be subdivided, resulting in two duplex buildings (i.e., four units) per parcel. Senator Wiener is also authoring legislation, SB 902, to provide cities with an expedited, streamlined process to rezone land for up to ten-unit buildings.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement regarding his legislation, SB 939, which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee today by a vote of 5-1. Senator Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) is a joint author of SB 939. It will now be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee in June. SB 939 would enact a moratorium on commercial evictions – for small businesses and nonprofits – during the COVID-19 State of Emergency.

Senators Wiener and Gonzalez Introduce New Amendments to SB 939 to Help Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes Renegotiate Rents Due to Reduced Capacity Under Public Health Orders

Sacramento - Today, Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) amended SB 939, which places a moratorium on commercial evictions of small businesses and nonprofits for the duration of the COVID-19 health emergency. The new amendments give businesses like bars, restaurants, and cafes the ability to renegotiate a lease if they have lost over 40% of their revenue due to COVID-19 restrictions and if they will operate at reduced capacity due to social distancing requirements.

Senator Wiener Pushes FDA to Let Gay/Bi Men Donate Convalescent Plasma

April 7, 2020

San Francisco -  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking them to allow gay and bisexual men who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate plasma. Convalescent plasma is currently being investigated as a potentially life-saving treatment for those suffering from severe COVID-19 infections. Despite that potential, the FDA continues to ban gay and bisexual men from donating blood or plasma, unless they have been celibate for three months.
