Senator Wiener’s Statement: Governor Brown Signs Housing Streamlining and Funding Bills

Statement on Proposed Tax Cut Plan by Republicans, Which Includes Repeal of Federal Estate Tax

Senator Wiener’s Housing Streamlining Bill, SB 35, Approved by Assembly as Part of Broad Housing Package

Sacramento – Today Senator Scott Wiener’s Senate Bill 35 – which creates a streamlined approval process for housing in cities that are not meeting their state-mandated housing goals – was approved by the California Assembly as a key part of a housing package. This streamlining will expedite the construction of critically needed housing, including affordable housing. SB 35 now goes back to the Senate for a concurrence vote to accept amendments made in the Assembly before moving to the Governor’s desk. SB 35 was previously approved by the Senate earlier this year.

California Legislature Passes Bipartisan Reform of California's Broken and Unfair Sex Offender Registry, Led by Law Enforcement

September 16, 2017

A bill to reform California’s broken sex offender registry was approved by the California State Legislature on the last day of legislative session. SB 384 passed the Assembly, and after receiving a concurrence vote in the Senate to accept amendments made in the Assembly, now moves to the Governor’s desk. Governor Brown's office announced he supports the bill.

Senator Wiener’s Bill to Fix California’s Broken Recycling Laws Passes Assembly

September 13, 2017

Sacramento –  Today the California State Assembly passed Senate Bill 458, a bill by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) to fix state recycling laws that are negatively impacting small grocery stores across California. The bill must go back to the Senate for a concurrence vote to accept amendments made in the Assembly before it moves to the Governor’s desk. The Senate previously passed SB 458 in July.

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) offered the following statement on the passing of Edie Windsor, who was the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act:

Senator Wiener’s LGBT Seniors Bill of Rights Passes Assembly, Moves to Governor for Approval

September 12, 2017

Sacramento –Today Senate Bill 219 by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which creates an LGBT Seniors Bill of Rights for seniors living in long-term care facilities, was approved by the California State Assembly. The bill was approved by the California Senate this past Spring, and now moves to the Governor’s desk after a Senate concurrence vote. Equality California is sponsoring SB 219, and the bill is co-authored by Assemblymembers David Chiu (D-San Francisco) and Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona.)

Senator Wiener’s LGBT Senior Bill of Rights Heads to Assembly for a Final Vote in the Face of Conservative Media Attacks

Sacramento Senate Bill 219 by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which creates an LGBT Senior Bill of Rights for seniors living in long-term care facilities, is awaiting a final vote on the Assembly floor, which could happen as early as this week. Last Friday, SB 219 was approved by the Assembly Appropriations committee. In recent weeks, the bill has come attacks by the right-wing media claiming that the bill will put people in jail for referring to seniors by the wrong gender pronoun.

California Mayors Support Senator Wiener’s SB 35 to Create More Housing

August 29, 2017

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo have endorsed SB 35, joining early supporters San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, and Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. SB 35 will create a streamlined approval process for housing in cities that are not meeting their housing goals required by the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA).
