San Francisco –  Today, San Francisco leaders joined together at a press conference to support a new bill authored by Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park) to expand and strengthen California conservatorship laws by giving counties broader reach and more flexibility to help those who cannot care for themselves and who are dying on our streets. SB 1045 is sponsored by San Francisco Mayor Mark Farrell, who is continuing the work Mayor Ed Lee started in bringing this issue forward.

Senator Wiener Introduces Drug Co-Pay Bill to Permanently Protect Consumers from Price Gouging

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced Senate Bill 1021, which will keep out-of-pocket drug costs low for consumers by preserving and strengthening existing drug pricing protections. SB 1021 does this by permanently extending drug co-pay limits and prescription drug pricing standards put in place in 2015 under a bill (AB 339) authored by Assemblymember Rich Gordon, which are currently set to expire at the end of 2019. SB 1021 also strengthens these protections, including by ensuring these pricing protections apply to HIV prevention drugs.

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and the Steinberg Institute, founded by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, announced the introduction of Senate Bill 1004, a bipartisan bill to expand effective early intervention for children, teenagers, college students, and young adults experiencing early signs of mental illness. SB 1004 does so by requiring a much more structured and focused approach on prevention and early intervention mental health programs funded by the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), which administers the millionaires tax (Prop 63).

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement after the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) released the official list of cities that will  have their housing approvals streamlined under Senate Bill 35, which Senator Wiener authored last year. The list is based on whether cities have met their Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) goals, which is the trigger for when streamlining applies under SB 35.

Senator Wiener Announces Bill to Expand On-Site Water Recycling in All California Cities

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D- San Francisco) announced a new bill, SB 966, to expand water recycling in California by developing statewide on-site water reuse regulations so local governments can increase water reuse across California. “On-site” means that the water recycling occurs in individual buildings, as opposed to utility-scale water recycling.

Senator Wiener Adjourns California State Senate in Memory of Cannabis Activist Dennis Peron

Sacramento  –  Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) adjourned the California State Senate in memory of cannabis activist Dennis Peron, who died on Saturday at the age of 71. Wiener honored Peron for his leadership in the cannabis legalization movement, particularly for how he dedicated himself to helping people living with HIV.
