State Senate Passes Senator Wiener’s Net Neutrality Bill

Sacramento–  Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) bill to restore net neutrality passed the California State Senate today, moving California closer to re-instating the net neutrality protections put in place by the Federal Communications Commission under President Obama in 2015. These protections were repealed by the FCC under President Trump in December.

Senate Passes Senator Wiener’s Drug Co-Pay Bill to Extend Consumer Price Gouging Protections

Sacramento –  Today, the State Senate passed Senator Scott Wiener’s Senate Bill 1021, which will keep out-of-pocket drug costs low for consumers by preserving and strengthening existing drug pricing protections. SB 1021 does this by extending drug co-pay limits and prescription drug pricing standards put in place in 2015 under a bill (AB 339) authored by Assemblymember Rich Gordon, which are currently set to expire at the end of 2019. SB 1021 also strengthens these protections, including by ensuring these pricing protections apply to HIV prevention drugs.

Net Neutrality Advocates Call for Senate to Pass SB 822 to Protect an Open Internet in California

Sacramento–  Today net neutrality supporters and state legislators rallied in the Capitol to call for the State Senate to pass Senate Bill 822, which will re-instate Obama-era net neutrality regulations in California. The State Senate must approve SB 822 by June 1, after which it will go to the Assembly.

Senator Wiener Introduces Bill to Save Compassionate Care Programs that Provide Free Cannabis to People with Serious Illnesses

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced a new bill to exempt compassionate care programs from paying state cannabis taxes when they are providing free medical cannabis to financially disadvantaged people living with serious health conditions. Due to an oversight in how Prop 64 was drafted, these not-for-profit donation programs that have been serving medical cannabis patients for decades are now being forced to pay taxes meant for businesses, which are forcing these charity programs to shut down.

Senator Wiener & Assemblymember Ting join Students, Legislators, Community Leaders to Announce New Bill to Prevent Gun Shows at the Cow Palace in Daly City

Daly City –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) joined students, elected officials, and gun violence prevention advocates to announce a new effort to ban gun and ammunition sales at the Cow Palace, a state-owned venue located in Daly City. The Cow Palace hosts gun shows a few times a year, most recently in April of this year. At that event, a group of high school students protested the gun show in hopes of ending gun sales in their community.

Governor Brown Signs Bill to Protect Immigrants Testifying in Court

Sacramento –  Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 785, which protects immigrants from irrelevant disclosures of their immigration status in open court. SB 785 was authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher (D-San Diego), and was approved with bipartisan support by both the Senate and the Assembly. As an urgency measure it required 2/3 approval by the Legislature, and it takes effect immediately.
