Senator Wiener's Statement on Demolition Day at Cupertino’s Vallco Mall, the Future Site of Thousands of Housing Units Streamlined by Senator Wiener’s SB 35

San Francisco— Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement on the first day of demolition at Cupertino’s Vallco Mall, which is the future site of at least 2,400 housing units, 50 percent of which will be affordable to low-income and very low-income people.  This project is set to invoke SB 35—a bill authored by Senator Wiener in 2017—that creates a streamlined approval process for housing in cities that are not meeting their state-mandated housing goals:

Senator Wiener’s Bill to Enact the Strongest Net Neutrality Protections in the Nation Passes the California Legislature and Heads to Governor for Approval

Sacramento– Today, Senate Bill 822, which enacts the strongest net neutrality protections in the country, passed the California Legislature with a vote of 27-12. Senator Wiener’s Bill to Help California Cities Expand On-Site Water Recycling Passes the Legislature

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 966, to expand water recycling in California by developing statewide on-site water reuse regulations so local governments can increase water reuse across California, passed out of the Legislature. Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) and Assemblywoman Blanca E. Rubio’s (D-Baldwin Park) bill to help the rising number of homeless youth in California, Senate Bill 918, passed the California Legislature. It passed with a vote of 39-0 and now heads to the Governor for his signature.

California Legislature Passes Cow Palace Gun Show Ban

August 30, 2018

Sacramento –  Today the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 221, which would ban all gun and ammunition sales at the Cow Palace, a state-owned venue located in Daly City. The Cow Palace hosts gun shows five times a year. The gun shows have drawn opposition from the community and local governments for years, including student protests at recent shows. SB 221 passed by a 26-13 vote and now goes to the Governor for his signature.

Sacramento–  Today, Senate Bill 822, which enacts the strongest net neutrality protections in the country, passed out of the Assembly with a 61-18 vote. SB 822 now heads back to the Senate for a concurrence vote, and if passed will go to the Governor for his signature. California Legislature Passes Senator Wiener’s Bipartisan Bill to Allow Cities to Extend Nightlife Hours to 4 AM

August 30, 2018

Sacramento – Today the Legislature passed Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 905 to allow – but not require – cities to extend sales of alcohol at bars, nightclubs, and restaurants (but not liquor stores) to as late as 4 a.m.  SB 905 passed the Senate with a 28-8 vote and will now go the Governor’s for his approval. The Governor has until September 30th to sign the bill.

California Legislature Passes Bill to Expand Conservatorship Laws to Help Homeless Individuals with Severe Mental Health & Substance Use Disorders

Sacramento – The California Legislature passed a bill by Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park) to expand and strengthen California conservatorship laws.  Senate Bill 1045 establishes a five year pilot program that authorizes San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego Counties to create a new conservatorship focused on providing critical services and housing to the most vulnerable Californians who suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues, and who cannot care for themselves.

Governor Brown Signs Bill to Officially Recognize Lunar New Year in California

Sacramento – On Friday, Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 892 by Dr. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento) and Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which officially recognizes Lunar New Year in the State of California. Sacramento — Today the California Legislature passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 110, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D- Richmond), calling on those in the medical community to recognize the human rights of individuals born with variations in their sex characteristics, sometimes referred to as intersex traits.
