SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg of Van Nuys issued the following after Gov. Newsom signed two bills to fight climate change by expanding access to energy sources and accelerating state capacity to meet clean energy goals.

Sacramento, Calif. – On September 16, 2022, Senator Lena A. Gonzalez (D-Long Beach), Senator Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) and community advocates released the following statement following Governor Gavin Newsom signing SB 1137 into law, which creates a minimum setback of 3,200-feet between sensitive receptors, such as a residence, school, childcare facility, playground, hospital, or nursing home and a new or reworked oil and gas production well.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Newsom signed Senator Josh Becker’s climate bills today, making the three key measures law that take effect January 1. These include the centerpiece of Senator Becker’s 2022 climate bill portfolio, Senate Bill 1203, which he announced at COP26 at Glasgow last year.

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed legislation by Senator Ben Hueso (D-40), which prevents California drivers from being cited by law enforcement for not having a registration sticker on the rear license plate if the registration on the specified vehicle is current.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 973 (SB 973), legislation sponsored by Treasurer Fiona Ma and authored by Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys), to explore ways to direct more resources to California’s aged, blind, and disabled populations.

SACRAMENTO – After the California Franchise Tax Board made clear it plans to tax forgiven federal student loans today, Sen. Steve Glazer (D-Contra Costa) reiterated his plans to introduce urgency legislation on the first day of the new legislative session in December to exempt the forgiven debts from state taxes. 
Current federal law exempts forgiven student loans from federal income taxes. But on Wednesday, the California Franchise Tax Board confirmed that the forgiven loans would be counted as income and taxed in California.

California state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, today issued the following statement about Covered California’s upcoming decision that could significantly expand access to affordable health care by reducing the copay costs for office visits, lab tests and prescriptions for Covered California enrollees:

Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 1294 authored by Senator Dave Cortese, (D-San Jose), Chair of the Senate Labor, Public Employment and Retirement Committee, that will address the rise in workplace violence. SB 1294 was authored in response to the mass shooting that occurred on May 26, 2021 at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency (VTA) Guadalupe Yard, the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the San Francisco Bay Area.
