SACRAMENTO, CA — Governor Brown has signed into law a bill, authored by Senator Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) and Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), which will permit the California Department of Social Services (DSS) to share criminal history exemption information of foster care providers with county child welfare agencies.

Sacramento – An innovative Oakland company, GoldieBlox, was selected today as “Small Business of the Year” for 2014 in the 9th Senate District by the California Legislature at an Awards Luncheon in Sacramento.  The event was attended by more than 70 legislators.

The company was nominated for the award by Senator Loni Hancock, who represents the district, which includes all of Alameda and parts of Contra Costa counties.  Joining Senator Hancock at the luncheon was Jan Hanson, Chief Operating and Financial Officer of the company.

Sacramento – Last night, the State Senate passed SB 892, a bill by Senator Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) to revise and reform solitary confinement conditions and procedures in California’s prisons on a bi-partisan vote of 25-11.  The bill now goes to the State Assembly for consideration.

“Isolating large numbers of inmates for long periods of time is an expensive and deeply troubling practice that undermines effective rehabilitation and long-term public safety,” Senator Hancock said.  “Tonight’s Senate vote is the first step in overhauling a failed system.”
