An Atascadero nonprofit received special recognition and a visit from a California senator in honor of the services they have provided to the community.
El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) was selected as a "2021 California nonprofit of the Year" by District 17 Sen. John Laird.

NAPA – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today on the inaugural observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day, which commemorates the notification on June 19, 1865 to enslaved African Americans that they had been freed:

This year, Santa Clara County is celebrating its first Juneteenth as a paid county holiday after becoming the first County in the state to pass a resolution for the holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. It will be celebrated every June 19th, which means most county offices will close and most county employees will have a paid day off. (As Juneteenth falls on a Saturday this year, County employees will have today off.)

SACRAMENTO - Senate Bill 73, legislation authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) that ends mandatory prison and jail sentences for nonviolent drug offenses, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee by a vote of 6-1. It will now head to the Assembly Appropriations Committee. 

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger) announced she will be continuing her “Food and Water Resiliency Tour” as drought conditions in California worsen.

SACRAMENTO – Today, President Biden signed S. 475, a federal bill which officially recognizes Juneteenth as a national holiday. Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) released the following statement in response:

SACRAMENTO – With the Legislature’s budget now on the Governor’s desk and further budget work in progress, Senator Josh Becker, D-Peninsula, doubled-down on his praise today of the “historic investments made toward the resilience and success of children, families and the state itself.”

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today regarding the vote in Congress to make Juneteenth, or June 19, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery:

“While we have come a long way since the end of slavery, there is still much work to be done to address police violence, voter suppression and mass incarceration,” Sen. Dodd said. “Designating Juneteenth at the federal level renews our commitment to ending systemic racism and ensuring equal justice for all.”

“Keeping Californians connected to drinking water is essential, regardless of their income level or economic status,” Sen. Dodd said. “My bill ensures families will be able to pay for water services needed to protect their health and safety. I thank committee members for maintaining access to this vital service.”
