Sen. Bob Hertzberg to join local bike ride along Metro Orange Line Bikeway in San Fernando Valley’s first-ever CicLAvia

VAN NUYS – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, a longtime advocate and entrepreneur for renewable energy and alternative power sources, will participate in two events early Sunday to promote pedal power as a transportation alternative.
The first will be at 7:45 a.m. as Hertzberg joins a special pre-event bike ride in Van Nuys to attend the San Fernando Valley’s first-ever CicLAvia early Sunday morning, March 22.
The second will be at 8:45 a.m. when Hertzberg will join other local elected officials in a press conference to talk about CicLAvia.

Leno Bill Gives Homeless Youth Access to High School Equivalency Exams

SACRAMENTO – Homeless youth across California would have greater access to the high school proficiency and equivalency exams under new legislation introduced by Senator Mark Leno. Senate Bill 252 would prohibit the Department of Education or testing companies from charging an exam fee to young people who are homeless.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire today advanced an appeal to the California Department of Business Oversight to directly insert the Department in the issue of Westamerica bank closing in Upper Lake.
Westamerica Bank’s proposed Upper Lake branch closure - the only bank in the community - was initially approved by the Department of Business Oversight, however, after residents and business owners rallied to raise awareness of the impact the closure would have on the larger community, the Department re-opened its case.

Senator Roth to Chair Oversight Hearing on Department of Consumer Affairs’ BrEZe IT Project

Senator Richard D. Roth (D-Riverside) will chair an Oversight Hearing of the Senate Budget Subcommittee No. 4 on Thursday, March 12, 2015, on the Department of Consumer Affairs’ (DCA) BrEZe IT project.

In addition to items proposed by the Governor, the subcommittee will review DCA’s efforts to implement a department-wide automated licensing and enforcement platform known as BreEZe.  The cost of implementing BreEZe has increased by over 300% since it began in 2009, and will now take nearly three years longer to implement than originally planned.

Senate environmental committee chairs blast lax oversight of state's oil and gas waste disposal wells

Sacramento – The chairs of the state Senate’s Environmental Quality and Natural Resources and Water committees said lax oversight by the state division in charge of overseeing the Underground  Injection Control Program has unnecessarily jeopardized the public’s health and safety by increasing the risk of groundwater contamination from oil and gas waste disposal wells.
