Mitchell’s Christmas in July event hosted hundreds of students and family members, with each guest presented with donated admission, a food voucher, Metro day pass and a gift bag which included thunder sticks to cheer on the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. While the game keyed on fun, Mitchell’s eighth annual Christmas-in-July event was part of her years-long effort to engage children to stay mentally, physically and nutritionally active during summer break.

State Makes Funding Available to Communities to Combat Homelessness

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) today announced that the state Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency (BCSH) has notified communities across California that funding is now available from two programs aimed at significantly reducing homelessness: the Homeless Emergency Aid Program and the Atkins-authored Building Homes and Jobs Act.

Senator McGuire passes bill to cut red tape and implement Quagga and Zebra Mussel inspection programs

Sacramento, CA – Senator Mike McGuire’s legislation that cuts through red tape and expedites Quagga Mussel inspection programs at Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma is now headed to the Governor’s desk after receiving bi-partisan support in the Legislature.

The bill would provide public agencies, like Sonoma Water, the authority to obtain funding from the State of California to implement inspection programs for invasive mussel species at local lakes controlled by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

California Cannabis Equity Act of 2018 Approved by the Legislature

SACRAMENTO ­– Late last week, Senate Bill 1294, the California Cannabis Equity Act was approved by the Legislature with strong bi-partisan support and is now on its way to Governor Brown’s desk, where he will take final action on all bills of his last legislative session in office. This bill, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), is the first of its kind, recognizing the damaging impacts cannabis prohibition has had on disadvantaged communities and in particular, communities of color.
