Let’s keep L.A.’s school children safe!

"Today, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Ramon Cortines closed all schools in the District in response to a credible threat of violence received late last night. Every school campus is being searched. LAUSD gave a televised update at 10 am, promising to continue to do so every half-hour for the remainder of the day.

The LAO Fiscal Outlook released November 18 contains hope. Their main scenario indicates $2 Billion is available for additional investment after meeting reserve requirements . The misery caused by our lack of investment is masked in this report  but is crystal clear in my District and across California. 

SACRAMENTO — A measure to protect students from being relegated to less challenging mathematics classes – even though they meet the academic requirements for those courses – was approved today by the State Assembly and is one step closer to becoming state law.

Sacramento - Almost exactly one year after a Ferguson, MO. police officer was accused of killing unarmed black teen Michael Brown, Governor Jerry Brown announced his signing of SB 227 authored by state Senator Holly J. Mitchell (D- Los Angeles) into law.

Sacramento — A measure to spare child witnesses from being required to give testimony in open court in criminal cases, has been signed into law by the Governor. As passed by the Legislature, with an effective date of the beginning of 2016, the bill extends to any potential witness aged 13 or younger, the same protection available under law to those child witnesses who cannot be required to testify in open court if they have been a victim of the crime under adjudication.

Sacramento – Senator Holly J. Mitchell's bill to repeal the Maximum Family Grant (MFG) rule in the CalWORKs program has been approved by the Senate. CalWORKs benefits are normally based, in part, on the number of family members in a household – except when a child is born into a family that is already receiving those benefits.

On the day of California’s constitutional deadline to adopt a budget, the Senate included recommendations from Budget Health and Human Services Subcommittee Chair Senator Holly J. Mitchell (SD 30 – Los Angeles) to increase funding for services for families living in poverty.

Sacramento - Senator Holly J. This year’s honoree is handbag designer Onna Erlich, founder of OnnaErlich.com, whom Senator Mitchell escorted, along with her husband/business partner Joel Bell and son James, onto the floor of the State Senate chamber to present her a Certificate of Commendation.
