Back to School Suicide Prevention Effort in Effect for the 2019/2020 School Year

Sacramento, California – Senator Anthony J Portantino’s (D - La Cañada Flintridge) is pleased that the student suicide prevention effort created by SB 972 is in effect for the 2019/2020 school year.  

“As a father, I don’t want to ever read another story in the paper about a teen who took his or her life.  I am hopeful that for students struggling with depression and grappling with suicidal thoughts, having this resource readily available will save a life.  It’s a simple idea that should have a significant impact,” commented Senator Portantino.

More Sleep for Teens Gets One Step Closer to Ringing the Bell SB 328 - Late School Start Time Bill Passes Assembly Education Committee

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 328, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) passed the State Assembly Education Committee.  SB 328 addresses the significant public health crisis of sleep-deprived teens by requiring high schools in California to start no earlier than 8:30 AM and middle schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 AM. The California State PTA and Start School Later Ink are sponsors of SB 328. The bill has garnered strong support from medical professionals, researchers, law enforcement and education advocates.

Ambassador Baibourtian Joins Senator Portantino in Sacramento for Armenian Trade Office Bill Hearing

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 302 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed the Assembly Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee. The bill seeks to reestablish the trade office between California and Armenia which was ended in 2008.   Ambassador Armen Baibourtian flew to Sacramento to offer his testimony in support of SB 302 as it would be the first international trade office reestablished since California ended the program.

$27 Million Glendale Affordable Housing Effort Passes Another Committee

July 3, 2019

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 532 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) passed the Assembly Local Government Committee. Senator Portantino introduced SB 532 at the request of the City of Glendale. After the dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies (RDAs), Glendale was left with $27 million dollars in bond proceeds but precluded from using these funds for housing.  SB 532 will give Glendale the ability to use these locally derived bond funds exclusively for affordable housing.

710 Formal Tunnel Demise SB 7 Passes Assembly Transportation Committee Local Nonprofits Offer Testimony in Sacramento

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 7, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge), passed the Assembly Transportation Committee. SB 7 will allow the purchase of surplus properties occupied by nonprofits at their current use value and prohibit Caltrans from implementing the tunnel or surface freeway options for the 710 gap closure. The bill is also a potential legislative fix for the state to return surplus freeway stubs back to local cities in the freeway corridor.
