First Senate Committee Unanimously Passes California/Armenia International Trade Office Bill

Sacramento, California – Today, SB 302 authored by State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge), to reestablish a trade office between California and Armenia passed the State Senate Business and Professions Committee.  The bill received bi-partisan support and garnered a unanimous vote.   Armenian Consul General Armen Baibourtian flew to Sacramento to offer testimony in favor of the proposal.

Senator Portantino Hosts Successful Senior Seminar in Sierra Madre – Second Event Set for April in Sun Valley

Sierra Madre, California – On March 11, 2019, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) hosted the first of two Senior Seminars with the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Office of State Controller Betty Yee, and the Office of Los Angeles County Assessor Jeffrey Prang, at the Hart Park House Senior Center in Sierra Madre. The representatives from each office shared information on different programs and services offered and answered numerous clarifying questions. Over 40 seniors attended Monday’s senior seminar.

California / Armenian International Trade Office Legislation Set for Committee Hearing

Sacramento, California – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) will be presenting SB 302, the Armenian/California International Trade and Investment Office Bill, before the Senate Business and Professions Committee on Monday, March 25, 2019.   SB 302 seeks to officially reestablish the trade office between California and Yerevan.  The office was originally created by Senator Jack Scott but terminated by Governor Schwarzenegger.  The Senate Business and Professions Committee is the first legislative hurdle for the bill.

State Senate Select Committee on California, Armenia and Artsakh Mutual Trade, Art and Cultural Exchange Reauthorized

Sacramento, CA – At the request of State Senator Anthony J. Portantino, the California State Senate Rules Committee re-authorized the State Senate Select Committee on California, Armenia and Artsakh Mutual Trade, Art and Cultural Exchange. The Committee aims to explore innovative ways of strengthening cultural and economic ties between our great state, Armenia and Artsakh.  Senator Portantino will continue chairing the committee throughout the 2019-2020 legislative session.

Claremont, California – Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) co- hosted a Gun Violence Legislation discussion with The League of Women Voters - Mt. Baldy Chapter, Pomona College’s Department of Politics, Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action this past Sunday on the Pomona College Campus.  The event was part of the League of Woman Voters Mt. Baldy Area’s Yearlong Speaker Series. Panelists shared public policy insights, new perspectives and reform ideas from the Senator and local community activists.

Property Tax Rebates and Redevelopment Bonds Take Shape Under Two District Bills Authored by Senator Portantino

Sacramento, California – Responding to a request from the City of Glendale, Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) has introduced SB 521 & SB 532.  If passed and signed, both bills will help the city with affordable housing pressures.  SB 532 is of particular importance to Senator Portantino as he voted against the dissolution of Redevelopment agencies while he was in the Assembly.  His independent vote caused him to be punished for sticking up for Glendale’s laudable Redevelopment work.

Senator Portantino Introduces Fertility Preservation Bill

Sacramento, California–Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) has introduced legislation, SB 600, which will insure health insurance coverage for cancer patients and others fighting diseases through aggressive treatments the options to protect their fertility. Senator Portantino has been endeavoring to solve this public health issue for over a decade by helping patients have fertility options. This has been a passion of his as a father of two daughters.

Community College Transfer Students Efficiently Receive Diplomas Under Senator Portantino Bill

Sacramento, California– Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D–La Cañada Flintridge) has introduced a bill that would more efficiently doll out degrees to students who have completed coursework and earned an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) at the time of transfer.  Under the current system, many students who transfer from California Community Colleges to an UC or CSU do so without their Associate Degrees for Transfer even after earning them.  Senator Portantino seeks to end this inefficient and penalizing system.
