Senator Wiener’s Legislation to End Discrimination Against LGBT People Regarding Sex Offender Registry Clears First Committee

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 145, which ends blatant discrimination against LGBT youth regarding California’s sex offender registry, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a 6-0 vote.

Senator Wiener’s Zoning Reform Bill, SB 50, Clears First Major Hurdle by Passing Senate Housing Committee

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 50 — the More HOMES Act (Housing, Opportunity, Mobility, Equity, and Stability) — cleared its first committee, the Senate Housing Committee, with a vote of 9-1. It will now head for a hearing in the Senate Governance and Finance Committee in the coming weeks. SB 50 creates new zoning standards for the construction of housing near job centers and public transportation, while protecting against the displacement of renters and vulnerable communities living in those areas.

Senator Wiener Introduces California Estate Tax Proposal to Fund Programs Reducing Wealth Inequality

March 26, 2019

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced the introduction of Senate Bill 378, which creates a California estate tax modeled on the federal estate tax, but with a lower exemption rate of $3.5 million ($7 million for a married couple). The tax phases out at the current federal estate tax exemption — $11.4 million ($22.8 million for a married couple) - thus avoiding double taxation. SB 378 contains the same exemptions as the federal estate tax (e.g., transfers to a surviving spouse and family farm exemptions) and the same tax rate (40%).

UC Student Association Announces Support for Senator Wiener’s SB 50—the More HOMES Act

Sacramento– Today, the University of California Student Association, the official voice of over 240,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from all ten UC campuses, has announced support for Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) SB 50 - the More HOMES Act. San Francisco –  Today, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), CALPIRG, and Environment California announced their support for Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) SB 50, the More HOMES Act. They join the California League of Conservation Voters and other organizations in supporting the legislation. Senator Wiener Announces the Ocean Resiliency Act of 2019, to Improve and Protect the Health of California’s Ocean Ecosystems and Coastal Communities

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced Senate Bill 69, the Ocean Resiliency Act of 2019, which aims to improve and protect the health of the Pacific Ocean off of California’s coastline. SB 69 will improve water quality by reducing land-based sources of pollutants that acidify our oceans; restore ocean habitats (e.g., kelp) that sequester greenhouse gas emissions; protect keystone species in order to maintain biodiversity; and convene a statewide advisory group to work on these and other issues impacting our oceans.

Sacramento– Today, Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Bill Dodd (D-Napa), and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) announced a legislative package to reduce food insecurity among Californians, by increasing the number of families and individuals who can access CalFresh (formerly called food stamps), the state’s most effective anti-hunger program.  Over 4.1 million low-income households in California are currently food unsecure, and California is among the lowest-performing states to connect households to federal food assistance.

Sacramento–Today, Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Jim Nielsen (R-Red Bluff) joined a large coalition of homeowners, school officials, farmers, and small businesses to announce bipartisan legislation aimed at creating a solar bill of rights to protect the right of consumers to generate and store their own clean energy on-site, without interference from utility companies. Senate Bill 288 enables more consumers to install and maintain renewable energy technologies by addressing some of the main barriers consumers currently face.
