Legislature Passes Senator Wiener’s Complete Streets Bill to Ensure State Highways that Run through Local Communities Are Safe and Usable by Transit Riders, Pedestrians, and Cyclists

San Francisco –  Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 127, which will prioritize the creation of ‘complete streets,’ including safer and better designed sidewalks, bikeways, and crosswalks, on state highways that run through cities, towns, and neighborhoods passed out the Legislature with a 28-12 vote. It will now head to the Governor who has 30 days to sign or veto the legislation.

Governor Signs Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Gloria’s Groundbreaking Legislation to Expand Access to PrEP, a Once-Daily Pill to Prevent HIV

San Francisco – Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom signing SB 159, which reduces barriers to accessing HIV preventative medications. Specifically, SB 159 authorizes pharmacists to furnish pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to patients without a physician prescription. PrEP is a once-daily pill for HIV-negative people that reduces risk of infection by up to 99%, and PEP is a 28-day preventative course for people who may have been exposed to HIV.

Legislature Passes Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Protect Sex Workers from Arrest when Reporting Violent Crimes & to Prohibit Use of Condoms as Evidence of Sex Work

San Francisco –  Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to protect sex workers from arrest for sex work after they report a serious and violent crime, such as rape, passed the Legislature. Senate Bill 233 also ensures that the possession of condoms may not be used as probable cause to arrest someone for sex work or introduced as evidence to prosecute someone for sex work. SB 233 now heads to the Governor who has 30 days to sign or veto the legislation.

Sacramento–  Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Todd Gloria’s (D-San Diego) legislation to reduce barriers to accessing HIV preventative medications passed the Assembly Committee on Health with a 13-0 vote. California’s Lieutenant Governor, Controller, Treasurer, and Insurance Commissioner Endorse Senator Wiener’s SB 50

July 25, 2019

San Francisco –  Today, California’s Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Controller Betty Yee, Treasurer Fiona Ma, and Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced their support of Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 50. SB 50 eliminates hyper-low-density zoning near transit and job centers, thus legalizing apartment buildings and affordable housing in these locations so that more people can live near transit and near where they work. It also reduces or eliminates minimum parking requirements for new developments.

San Francisco –  Today, Governor Newsom signed Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to protect sex workers from arrest for misdemeanor sex work related crimes after they report a serious and violent felony, such as rape. Senate Bill 233 also ensures that the possession of condoms cannot be used as probable cause to arrest someone for sex work or introduced as evidence to prosecute someone for sex work. SB 233 will take effect on January 1, 2020

Governor Signs Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Extend Domestic Partnership to Opposite Sex Couples

July 30, 2019

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to allow all Californians to register as domestic partners instead of marrying, Senate Bill 30, was signed into law by Governor Newsom. Under current law, only same sex couples and opposite sex couples age 62 and older are eligible for domestic partnerships. SB 30 ends this discrimination.

Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Streamline Navigation Center Permitting Adopted as Part of State Budget

San Francisco –  Senator Scott Wiener's (D-San Francisco) legislation to streamline the approval of navigation centers was signed into law last week by Governor Gavin Newsom, as part of AB 101, a budget trailer bill. Previously part of Senate Bill 48, this policy aims to ensure that homeless individuals and families throughout California have reasonable access to shelter, including navigation centers. Californians currently have inconsistent access to navigation centers and shelter.
