Senator Wiener’s Bill Holding PG&E Accountable for Power Blackouts Passes Senate Floor Vote

Sacramento – Today Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to hold PG&E accountable for mass blackouts and their impacts passed out of the Senate with a floor vote of 25-2-12. It will now head to the Assembly where it will likely be heard in June or July of 2020.

Senator Wiener Introduces Legislation to Establish a Master Plan to End the Epidemics of HIV, Hepatitis C and Other STDs

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D- San Francisco) introduced a bill today that would require state agencies to establish and implement a master plan to end new infections of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The diseases disproportionately impact gay and bisexual men, African American men, and young people ages 15-24. Though many effective preventative and treatment tools exist today, these epidemics still persist.

Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Weber Ask Governor Newsom to Posthumously Pardon Gay Civil Rights Leader Bayard Rustin

Sacramento – Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego), on behalf of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus and the Legislative Black Caucus, asked Governor Gavin Newsom to issue a posthumous pardon to Bayard Rustin, a gay civil rights leader. Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey supports the pardon request.

Senator Wiener Introduces SB 822 to Simplify CalFresh Application for Seniors

January 23, 2020

Sacramento - Senator Scott Wiener (D- San Francisco) introduced Senate Bill 822 today, which would simplify CalFresh applications for seniors, and create set a timeline in statute by when all eligible Californians will be able to complete or recertify the CalFresh application entirely by phone. Assemblymember David Chiu (D- San Francisco) and Devon Mathis (R- Visalia) are principal co-authors of the bill, and Senator Bill Dodd (D- Napa) and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D- Oakland) are co-authors of the bill, demonstrating the bipartisan support for the legislation.

Dozens of Local Elected Officials Announce Support for SB 50

Sacramento – Local elected officials and city councils from across California recently announced their support for SB 50, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) zoning reform bill. The elected officials who are now endorsing the bill are from a wide swath of California, including Los Angeles County, the Central Coast, the North Bay, the Central Valley, and the Bay Area. Additionally, the City Councils of Albany and Milpitas both voted to endorse the bill, and San Mateo City Council – which had formerly opposed SB 50 – voted to withdraw its opposition.
