Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Gloria’s Legislation to Increase Access to PrEP, a Once-Daily Pill to Prevent HIV Passes Assembly Committee

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Todd Gloria’s (D-San Diego) legislation to reduce barriers to accessing HIV preventative medications passed the Assembly Committee on Business and Professions with a 17-0 vote. It now heads to the Assembly Committee on Health for a vote. SB 159 authorizes pharmacists to furnish pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to patients without a physician prescription.

Senator Wiener’s Bill to Fight Vehicle Break-in Epidemic Passes Assembly Committee

June 25, 2019

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to close a loophole that hampers prosecutions for automobile break-ins passed the Assembly Committee on Public Safety with a 5-0 vote. It now heads to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations for a vote. Current statue requires prosecutors to prove that the door of a burglarized car was locked, even if the evidence shows that the defendant bashed in a window or the victims testifies that they locked their doors.

Senator Wiener’s Criminal Justice Reform Legislation to Repeal Unnecessary One-Year Enhancements on Sentences Passes Assembly Committee

Sacramento –  Yesterday, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D- San Francisco) legislation to repeal a one-year sentence enhancement that is added to an individual’s base sentence for each prior prison or felony jail term served passed the Assembly Committee on Public Safety with a 6-2 vote. SB 136 now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

“Today is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when our community rose up and said: ‘No more. You’re not doing this to us anymore.’ Stonewall wasn’t the first uprising—San Francisco and Los Angeles were first—but Stonewall galvanized an international movement for LGTBQ equality and inclusion. Senator Wiener Announces Legislation to Allow Dreamers and Other Immigrants to Run for Democratic Party County Central Committee and State Delegate Seats

San Francisco–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), Dreamers, Democratic Party leaders, and immigrant rights advocates rallied to announce the introduction of Senate Bill 288. SB 288 would make it legal for Dreamers and other immigrants to run for California Democratic Party County Central Committee seats and for California Democratic Party Delegate positions. It is currently impossible for Dreamers and other immigrants to register as Democrats and thus run for these positions. A “Dreamer” is an individual born in a foreign country who was brought to the U.S.

Assembly Passes Senator Wiener’s Legislation to Protect Sex Workers from Arrest when Reporting Violent Crimes & to Prohibit Use of Condoms as Evidence of Sex Work

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to protect sex workers from arrest for sex work after they report a serious and violent crime, such as rape, passed out of the Assembly with a 54-13 vote. It will now head to the Senate for a concurrence vote.

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 69, the Ocean Resiliency Act of 2019, which aims to improve and protect the health of the Pacific Ocean off of California’s coastline passed the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife with a 9-3 vote.

It now heads to the Assembly for committee hearings in the coming weeks. SB 159 authorizes pharmacists to furnish pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to patients without a physician prescription.
