Media Advisory - Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law Bill Signing Press Conference To Be Held Tomorrow

Sacramento – Senator Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia), joined by the parents of a special needs student who tragically died after being left unattended on a school bus, and child safety advocates will hold a press conference at the Whittier City Hall on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 12 p.m. regarding Governor Jerry Brown signing SB 1072 (Mendoza), also known as the “Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law” into law. The new law requires all school buses in California to be equipped with a child-safety alarm system.

Governor Signs Bill to Help Bridge Digital Divide In Disadvantaged Communities

Sacramento, CA… State Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), today announced that Governor Brown has signed into law Senate Bill (SB) 745, a bill that helps to bridge the digital divide.   SB 745 extends by four years the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF) Public Housing Account, and improves the accountability and the reporting of existing programs by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Brown signs bill by Senator Pavley to better ensure collection of restitution for crime victims

SACRAMENTO – To end uncertainty in the collection of victim restitution from convicted offenders that resulted from public safety realignment, Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed a bill by Senator Fran Pavley that will both ensure restitution is collected from the accounts of county jail inmates and that funds aren’t double-collected from individuals on Post-Release Community Supervision.

Bill to Expand Affordable Housing for Teachers Signed by Governor

SACRAMENTO – A measure authored by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and sponsored by the City of San Francisco to expand affordable housing options for teachers was signed by Governor Brown today. SB 1413 will help California retain quality educators by allowing school districts to establish housing for teachers and employees on district-owned property.

Governor Signs Bill to Restrict Youth Confinement

SACRAMENTO – Senator Mark Leno’s (D- San Francisco) bill to limit the use of room confinement in juvenile facilities was signed by the Governor today. Senate Bill 1143 states that room confinement can only be used after less restrictive options have been tried and bans its use for the purposes of punishment, coercion, convenience or retaliation. The law will go into effect January 1, 2017.

New law establishes comprehensive safety reforms for natural gas storage wells in aftermath of last year’s disaster at Aliso Canyon

Responding to lessons learned from the massive Aliso Canyon natural gas leak, Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday signed a bill by Senator Fran Pavley to establish proactive safety standards for natural gas storage wells.

Among provisions in SB 887 are requirements for continuous monitoring for leaks, regular inspections of wells to test their mechanical integrity, and that all wells be equipped with safeguards to ensure that no single point of failure can result in a leak.

Governor Brown Signs Legislation to Determine Economic Impact of Diablo Canyon Closure

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Governor Jerry Brown today signed Senate Bill (SB) 968, legislation to evaluate the economic impact of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant closure, authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and co-authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Assemblymember Katcho Achadjian.  The bill calls for an assessment of the adverse and beneficial economic impacts facing San Luis Obispo County once the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant shuts down, and will offer potential mitigation actions for anticipated adverse impacts.
