Santa Monica, CA - Every year, in a tradition dating back to 1987, the California State Senate celebrates Women’s History Month by recognizing remarkable women throughout the state who make a positive difference in their communities.  On Friday, May 27th, more than 200 community members joined Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) at the historic Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club as he honored Amy Ziering as this year’s Senate District 26 Woman of the Year.

SB 1010 Now Heads to the Assembly

SACRAMENTO – Today the California State Senate approved passage of Senate Bill 1010, to provide transparency in drug pricing.

Authored by Senator Ed Hernandez, O.D. (West Covina) and approved by a bipartisan vote of 24-8, SB 1010 provides information on drug prices, a first step towards more affordable and accessible prescription drugs for Californians.

State Senate Passes “College Ready” Legislation

SACRAMENTO - The California State Senate today passed legislation to better prepare California public school students from poor and working families for admission to state colleges and universities. SB 1050 passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan vote of 32-6 and now moves to the Assembly for further consideration.

State Senate Passes Senator Roth’s Proposals Protecting Survivors of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

(Sacramento, CA) – Today, Senator Richard D. Roth's (D-Riverside) proposals protecting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence each passed the California State Senate on bipartisan, unanimous votes.  Senate Bill 870 passed on a 39-0 vote, and Senate Bill 883 passed on a 38-0 vote.

Lifesaving Organ Transplant Legislation Signed by Governor

Sacramento, CA – Urgency legislation authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) passed the legislature and was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown today decriminalizing organ donations by HIV-positive persons to HIV-positive persons in need of an organ transplant.  The bill, SB 1408, will improve the life expectancies of people with HIV who need organ transplants by removing California’s prohibition on donating organs while HIV positive.
