SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate passed the 2016-17 budget bill by a vote of 27-11. SB 826 (Leno) is on time, balanced, includes $122 billion spending plan, appropriates record levels of K-12 per-pupil spending, invests in public higher education, allocates money to the rainy day fund, and focuses on issues of poverty, housing and childcare.

SACRAMENTO – With the passage of the 2016-17 budget, the California Legislature made key investments to bolster higher education in the state.

SACRAMENTO, CA—California’s State Legislature voted late yesterday to establish a firearm violence research center at the University of California, filling the gap left by Congressional restrictions on firearms research, four days after the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

SACRAMENTO -- Senator Jim Beall, D-San Jose, chairman of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee, issues this statement regarding the $122 billion spending budget passed by the Legislature:

“The new budget, passed on time, is a sensible and responsible plan that reflects the Legislature’s priorities together with the Gov. Brown’s vision for California’s future. This budget lifts people up who have not shared in the economic recovery and also prudently sets more money aside for emergencies.

STATEMENT

Good morning

I stand before you pleased that 2016 is the year we finally say good-bye to a rule that has been dubbed in the press as “California’s Worst Law.”

SACRAMENTO – Late this afternoon both houses of the legislature adopted the 2016-17 State Budget which included $20 million in funding for the Napa County jail and $5 million for the California Firearm Violence Research Center.
