Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa) has been named as chairman of the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee by Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León.

SACRAMENTO – Earlier today, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) selected Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) to serve on the following committees:

• Education
• Elections and Constitutional Amendments
• Health
• Public Employment and Retirement
• Rules

Senator Leyva will also continue serving as Democratic Caucus Chair of the California State Senate.

California Senators Jerry Hill and Ben Allen introduced a joint resolution today calling upon other states to pass National Popular Vote legislation to ensure that electoral votes for the president of the United States reflect the will of American voters.

Glendale, CA – Today Senator Anthony J. Portantino introduced Resolution SCR 8, which will name the segment of the CA-134 freeway between the Glendale CA-2 and the Interstate 210 Freeway the “President Barack H. Obama Freeway”.  President Obama attended Occidental College in Eagle Rock from 1979 to 1981 and lived in Pasadena during his sophomore year.

Laws to protect Californians from DUI offenders, help establish an earthquake early warning system, reform the California Public Utilities Commission, increase oversight of building contractors, require police to securely stow any handgun left in a car, improve tour bus safety, crack down on water-guzzling households, and more take effect on January 1. The new laws are the result of 17 bills that were introduced by Senator Jerry Hill, passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2016.

La Cañada Flintridge, CA – After over a decade of work by many local leaders on the dispensation of Caltrans owned properties along the SR-710 corridor, Senator Portantino is happy to announce that Caltrans has begun the process of selling the homes this week. Sacramento – The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) today released guidelines to assist cities with the implementation of new laws, including SB 1069 by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont), that reduce barriers to building accessory dwelling units(ADUs) to increase the supply of lower-cost housing in the state.
