SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today signed SB 274 by State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont), a bill to modernize and increase local government transparency policies by requiring local agencies to email agenda packets to people who request them. The Legislature passed the bill with bipartisan support. It is supported by media organizations, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the Los Angeles Sunshine Coalition.

Inspired in part by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration, Senate Bill 628 by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) will provide employment and job training for artists and creative sector workers. The new law focuses on uplifting people from disadvantaged communities who may not otherwise have opportunities to pursue careers in the arts.

Newsom Signs Skinner’s SB 354, Foster Care Placement with Relatives

California Gov. Gavin Newsom today signed Sen. Nancy Skinner’s SB 354, which removes obstacles in the foster care system that have prevented children from being placed with a relative caregiver who may have a past conviction. Current law can prevent someone from caring for a child, even when their past conviction is decades old and they pose no safety risk to the child.
Governor Signs SB 81, Judicial Guidance on Sentence Enhancements

California Gov. Gavin Newsom today signed SB 81, legislation by Sen. Nancy Skinner that provides guidelines to judges on the use of sentence enhancements. SB 81 is designed to address the proliferation of sentence enhancements, which can often double the length of a prison term and have been disproportionately applied to people of color and those suffering from mental illness.
