Sacramento - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling that discrimination against LGTBQ workers is barred by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This ruling is a defeat for the Trump administration, who claimed that this type of discrimination against LGTBQ individuals was not banned by the Civil Rights Act and was legal. 

Sacramento - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced the introduction of Senate Bill 288, which expands CEQA statutory exemptions to streamline approval of sustainable transportation projects — public transportation, bike safety, and pedestrian projects — thus speeding up their approval in order to get them moving.

SACRAMENTO, CA - SCR 86, designating the 19th Avenue Lemoore Overpass as the “Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing” won bipartisan approval from the California State Senate with a 37-0 vote. The resolution by state Senator Melissa Hurtado, D-Sanger will memorialize the fallen Officer’s service and contributions to the community.

Senate Leader Atkins Applauds SCOTUS Decision Protecting LGBTQ Workers from Unlawful Termination

Atkins (D-San Diego) today released this statement regarding the 6-to-3 U.S. Supreme Court decision that the Title VII Act barring sex discrimination in the workplace also protects LGBTQ workers from being fired on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity:

(Sacramento, CA)— Today, legislation to ensure compliance of labor laws for H-2A workers passed out of the Senate and is on its way to the Assembly for consideration.  Senate Bill (SB 1102), authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel), would require all of California’s H-2A visa employers to provide a written notice of basic California legal rights in Spanish and, if requested, in English to all H-2A farm workers.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana) and Assemblymember Tyler Diep (R-Westminster), released the below statement regarding the reopening of nail salons in California. In the last few weeks, Senator Umberg and Assemblymember Diep formed a bipartisan coalition of eight legislators representing Orange County engaged in discussions with the office of Governor Gavin Newsom on this subject. The legislators formalized their request in a letter to the governor earlier this week. Earlier today, the Governor announced the reopening of nail salons effective June 19th.

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana), Chair of the Senate Committee on Elections and Constitutional Amendments, presented Assembly Bill 860 (AB 860) as Joint Author on the Senate Floor. The bill passed the Senate floor with bipartisan support; a vote of 31 to 7. The bill will next be heard in the Assembly Committee on Elections and Redistricting.
