SACRAMENTO -- After repeated failed attempts over the past four years, Senator Henry Stern (D-Los Angeles) is taking another run at limiting risky new development in wildfire zones around California. But SB 1292, Stern argues, “is about saying yes twice as much we say no.”

The bill allows local governments to firmly restrict new development in fire zones, but preconditions such restriction on housing units to be doubled outside the fire zones, thus addressing the state’s massive affordable housing shortfall.

Senator Josh Becker announced a bill today to help unlock funding for affordable housing creation by eliminating onerous misdirected penalties against affordable housing developers in cities and counties that have not complied with state law requiring local governments to have adequate plans to meet housing needs.“We should not punish affordable housing developers who did nothing wrong,” said Senator Becker, D-Peninsula. “There are many penalties on the books right now for cities and counties with noncompliant housing elements.

SB 1100 authored by Senator Cortese (D-Silicon Valley) along with principal co-author Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Silicon Valley) is moving forward after passing the Senate Governance and Finance Committee.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) introduced Senate Bill 1336, which establishes a carryforward tax credit for commercial cannabis retailers. Due to the high taxes levied on the legal sale of cannabis, commercial prices often cannot compete with the illicit market, leading recreational users and patients alike to purchase unregulated products and leaving small, legal businesses to suffer.

SB 1144 requires public schools and state agencies to complete a water quality and efficiency assessment on their facilities. This bill ensures our public schools and state agencies have safe, drinkable water. Far too many school children and other California residents currently lack access to clean water.
