Senator Wiener’s Fresh Start Act, to Remove Outstanding Restitution as a Barrier to Expungement, Passes Senate Public Safety

SACRAMENTO - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco)’s Senate Bill 1106, the Fresh Start Act, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a vote of 4-1. It will now be heard by the full Senate. SB 1106 helps people clear their criminal records by ensuring outstanding restitution and restitution fines are not a barrier to expungement. Currently, people across California are frequently denied record sealing and expungement because they are poor and cannot afford to pay outstanding restitution and restitution fines.

Sacramento, Calif. – On March 22, 2022, Senator Lena A. Gonzalez’s (D-Long Beach) SB 245 the Abortion Accessibility Act was signed into law by Governor Newsom. SB 245 will remove cost-barriers to abortion by requiring all state-licensed health care service plans to cover abortion services without a co-payment, deductible, or any type of cost-sharing.

Senate Leader Atkins’ Bill to Strengthen San Diego River Conservancy Passes Senate Natural Resources

SACRAMENTO – Today, the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water passed SB 1027, legislation by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) that would expand the jurisdiction of the San Diego River Conservancy (SDRC) to include the entire San Diego River watershed. The bill passed with a bipartisan 8-0 vote.

Caballero (D-Merced) introduced SB1308 which would clarify and strengthen California’s Buy American policy by requiring all California public schools, colleges and universities to purchase agricultural products grown, packaged or processed domestically, unless the price of the foreign product is more than twenty-five percent lower than a domestic product. SB1308 would improve the quality and safety of public school, college and university meal and nutrition programs, protect California jobs, and support California’s agricultural industry.
