California Legislature passes landmark bill to license debt collectors

SACRAMENTO – With an eye toward shielding consumers from unscrupulous debt collectors preying on California families during the COVID-19 induced economic crisis, the state Legislature today approved a bill by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) to license debt collectors and debt buyers operating in California.  The bill, SB 908, now heads to Governor Newsom for his consideration.  It is supported by a large coalition of consumer organizations and legal service providers.

CA Legislature Passes Senator Rubio’s Domestic Violence Bill Expanding Protections for Victims

SACRAMENTO, CA –The California Legislature today passed a bill by Sen. Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park) that would expand protections for domestic violence survivors by allowing them to describe psychologically damaging and abusive behavior as supporting evidence in family court hearings and criminal trials. The bill now heads to the governor’s desk.

Senator Caballero Authors COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act, Averting an Eviction Crisis

Today, the California State Senate passed landmark legislation to protect renters across the state from looming evictions from job and revenue loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act will protect renters from evictions due to a COVID-related hardship until January 31, 2021, but still hold them responsible for paying past due rents to landlords.

Assembly Appropriations Kills SB 414 and its Safe Drinking Water Plans

On August 20, the Chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee killed SB 414, a bill to help disadvantaged communities throughout California who suffer from the lack of safe drinking water due to contamination. 

SB 414 represents three years’ worth of work to construct a pragmatic, thoughtful solution that would have provided the State Water Resources Control Board the authority to order consolidation of small water districts in order to secure safe drinking water for predominately communities of color.

Legislature Passes “The Equal Insurance HIV Act” Enacting Anti-discrimination Protections

Sacramento, Calif.- On Sunday night, the California State Legislature approved SB 1255 authored by Senator Lena Gonzalez (D- Long Beach) and the Senate Committee on Insurance. The measure, also known as The Equal Insurance HIV Act, now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature. If signed into law, The Equal Insurance HIV Act would end the unjust practice of insurance companies discriminating against HIV-positive individuals.
