SACRAMENTO – Senator Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, was sworn in to the California State Senate today for his second and final term in the legislative body after receiving the vote of 78.09% of the 18th Senate District. Senator Hertzberg is one of few sitting legislators who has held office over the course of the last three decades; he was first elected to the California State Assembly in 1996, and served as the 64th Assembly Speaker from April 2000 through February 2002 before being elected to the California State Senate in 2014.

SACRAMENTO – Holly J. Mitchell of Los Angeles took her oath of office as a representative of the diverse 30th Senate District as part of today’s stately convening of the 2019-20 legislative session.

Mitchell promised to continue fighting for working families. She is the first African American to chair the powerful Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee and ran unopposed last month to win reelection to a second four-year term. She is termed out in 2022.

Sacramento, CA – Senators Jim Beall and Mike McGuire have been working for months to develop comprehensive policy and funding legislation focused on housing that is affordable for seniors, nurses, teachers, veterans and low and middle income Californians.

The legislation, which will take an aggressive and in-depth approach to the state’s affordable housing crisis, will be introduced in the coming weeks as a series of bills.

Senators Ben Allen and Scott Wiener Propose Bill to Repeal Constitutional Roadblock to Affordable Housing

Sacramento– Today, Senators Ben Allen (D - Santa Monica) and Scott Wiener (D- San Francisco) introduced legislation to repeal article 34 of the California Constitution, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles are sponsoring the legislation. Originally added in 1950, Article 34 requires cities to submit projects to a voter referendum when public funds are allocated to developing low-income rental housing. In the decades since its passage, cities have been forced to comply with a web of regulatory requirements and costly elections to build affordable housing.
