Senate Passes Bill to Protect Marine Wildlife from California Driftnets

Today, SB 1017, a bill that would transition California away from the use of large-scale driftnets, successfully cleared the California Senate. The bill was approved 33-0 and will now head to the state Assembly.

Legislation to Mitigate Impact of Diablo Closure Passes Off Senate Floor

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Yesterday the California State Senate passed Senate Bill (SB) 1090 off of the Senate Floor.  The bill is a bipartisan effort authored by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) and Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) to aid in the mitigation of the impact of the Diablo Canyon plant closure.

Senate approves package of Wieckowski housing bills

SACRAMENTO – The California State Senate approved a package of housing bills authored by Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) today to boost construction of affordable housing and accessory dwelling units, and to improve governance of homeowner associations. The three bills, SB 1333, SB 831 and SB 1265 now head to the Assembly.

SB 1333 eliminates a loophole that allows charter cities to undermine the state’s housing element laws.

SACRAMENTO -- A bill from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that will help wildfire victims recover losses from insurance companies was approved Tuesday by the full Senate over intense industry lobbying.

“Tragic and destructive wildfires over the past few years have revealed shortcomings in the law that have allowed insurance companies to take advantage of people,” Senator Dodd said. “This bill will put an end to the abuses, providing needed relief for victims struggling desperately to put their lives back together.”

California Senate Passes SB 1200, Senator Skinner’s Bill to Strengthen California’s Gun Violence Restraining Order

Today, the California Senate passed Senator Nancy Skinner’s (D-Berkeley) SB 1200, “Strengthening California’s Gun Violence Restraining Order.” SB 1200 would enhance California’s existing Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO), a law Skinner authored when she was in the Assembly. SB 1200 is now on its way to the Assembly for approval.

Senator Portantino’s Gun Violence Prevention Bill Passes the Senate

Sacramento, California – Today, the California State Senate voted to pass SB 1100 authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, D–La Cañada Flintridge. SB 1100 proposes to prohibit a person from making more than one firearm purchase within a 30-day period in California and increases the age requirement for purchasing all firearms to 21 years. The bill is now headed to the Assembly.

Hertzberg Bill to Shine Light on Bail Surety Industry Passes Senate Floor

SACRAMENTO – Senator Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, today announced that his legislation to further his ongoing examination of the state’s bail industry, Senate Bill 898, cleared the Senate Floor and is headed to the California State Assembly.

SB 898, which is co-authored by Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland), shines a light on the bail industry’s lending practices by authorizing the Insurance Commissioner to examine the bail insurance market, their profits, and the relationship between the risk assumed by the insurer and the rates charged to those seeking a bail bond.
