Substance Use Disorder Patient Protection Act (Senate Bill 1228) will ban “patient brokering” and raise standards for treatment of addiction

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) took a major step toward rooting out insurance fraud and improving care for patients in recovery from addiction with the introduction of the Substance Use Disorder Patient Protection Act, Senate Bill 1228.

Sacramento –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced a new civil rights bill to ensure that transgender individuals in California jails and prisons are treated equally and with dignity. Senate Bill 990 requires correctional facilities to allow people in custody to register their preferred gender identity and first name, and also that facility staff address people by these expressed preferences.

State Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) has introduced legislation aimed at increasing the production of needed housing for California’s college and university students. Skinner’s bill, SB 1227, would change state housing law to encourage the construction of student housing that includes affordable student units.

SACRAMENTO—In a ceremony in the state Capitol Wednesday, Sen. Toni Atkins was sworn in as the 48th President pro Tempore of the California Senate.

Following introductory remarks from Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, outgoing President pro Tempore Kevin de León introduced Senate Resolution 88, proposing that Atkins be elected by a vote of her colleagues. The resolution passed unanimously. Atkins was escorted to the rostrum, and California Supreme Court Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye administered the oath of office.
