Sen. Wieckowski to hold Sac State press conference on bill to help private student loan borrowers

Sacramento – State Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) will be joined by California State University students at a press conference in support of his Senate Bill 16, which would lower the cap on the amount of wages private student loan lenders can garnish from borrowers.  The bill, supported by a large group of consumer advocates, is currently on the Assembly floor and is one step away from going to the Governor.

Sacramento, CA – Senator Josh Newman has been named Chair of a newly ratified Subcommittee on Professions and Licensure. The subcommittee is housed under the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.

The newly formed Subcommittee is made up of nine Senators, with Newman serving as Chair, and Senators Dodd, Fuller, Galgiani, Glazer, Hernandez, Hill, Pan and Wilk filling the remaining vacancies.

Senator Lara Introduces Sister State Resolution with Nayarit, Mexico, to Recognize Contributions of State’s 350,000 Immigrant Residents

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 81 to make Nayarit a sister state and recognize the heritage of 350,000 Nayaritas who make their home in California.

The Pacific state of Nayarit is home to just 1 million people, and has a land mass 1/16th the size of California. But immigrants from Nayarit have contributed greatly to California’s culture and economy.

Two of Senator Newman’s Military Measures Head to Governor Brown’s Desk

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Josh Newman has successfully sent two of his seven bills assisting members of the armed services and their families, to Governor Jerry Brown for his signature. Senate Bills (SB) 455 and 747, each of which assists California's military and their families, passed out of the Assembly today with no opposition.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) released the following statement after Anthem Blue Cross removed Long Beach Memorial Medical Center as an in-network provider, leaving residents and city employees without medical:

“Long Beach residents woke up last week to find that Anthem Blue Cross had hung a ‘closed’ sign on their medical home. Residents and city employees for whom Anthem Blue Cross is their only health insurance option faced a painful choice of paying out of pocket or canceling appointments.
