SACRAMENTO – Seven bills authored by Senator Jim Beall are heading for full consideration by the Senate after winning approval today from the Appropriations Committee. Among the bills are two that would create more affordable housing and provide courts with the latitude to steer people with mental illnesses into treatment instead of incarceration.

Senator McGuire responds to Governor’s request for federal salmon disaster

Sacramento, CA – California’s iconic salmon fishery, and the thousands of families who depend on the fishery for their livelihood, are in crisis. There has been an unprecedented collapse in California’s salmon population, tribal allocations are at an all-time low, and the proposed closures and minimal open salmon fishing seasons will have significant negative impacts on thousands of California residents.

Sacramento, CA – President Trump clearly has significant and unethical ties to Russia and every day the scandals worsen, yet we still don’t know the full extent of his dealings with Russia and the serious conflicts of interest they continue to generate. The California state legislation that would mandate Presidential candidates release their tax returns in order to appear on the ballot was approved in the Senate Appropriations Committee this morning, clearing the way for a vote of the full Senate in the next week.

Sacramento –  Today the Senate Appropriations Committee approved bills by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) to address California’s housing shortage, dramatically expand the use of solar power, guarantee rights for LGBT seniors in long-term care facilities, strengthen food access for low-income communities, modernize HIV criminalize laws, and allow communities to choose to extend the sale of alcohol as late as 4 AM in bars and restaurants. These bills will go to the full Senate for a vote next week, with the deadline for passage being June 2.

SACRAMENTO – Legislation by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, that would reform California’s cash bail system, reduce traffic ticket fines for people who can’t afford them and prevent school lunch shaming passed the Senate Appropriations Committee today.

Sacramento, CA – Today, Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) was elected Chair of the San Gabriel Valley Legislative Caucus. He will succeed outgoing Chair, Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) who will now serve as Vice-Chair.

SACRAMENTO – Today, six of Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez’, O.D. (D-West Covina) bills were approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee and will now advance to the Senate Floor for a vote by the entire Senate body. Among them is Senate Bill 17, which provides transparency on rising drug prices in California and is a step toward more affordable and accessible prescription drugs for everyone in the state.

State Senator Henry Stern is seeking artist submissions of original works which capture the spirit of California, and in particular Senate District 27, while reflecting on this moment in history.

Finalists will be featured in a local summer showcase in Southern California with one work selected to be displayed in the State Capitol art exhibit through September 2018.
